On Saturday, 29th November women from across Co. Monaghan came together to mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign at a Ladies Breakfast event hosted by YWCA Monaghan.
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence is an international campaign that starts on 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and ends on 10 December, Human Rights Day. The campaign hopes to raise awareness about gender-based violence as a human rights issue at the local, national, regional and international level.
Guest speakers Siobhan McKenna (Tearmann Domestic Violence Service) and Ursula McKenna (Dochas for Women) highlighted the support services available to women in the county and encouraged all present to be vigilant in identifying the signs of domestic violence. Audrey Wilson (YWCA Ireland) closed the event stating that ‘Violence Against Women’ includes all kinds of physical, emotional, psychological abuse of women and girls – including domestic abuse and rape. ALL are violations of the most fundamental human rights’.
The YWCA Monaghan committee would like to thank the women who supported this important event and who donated gifts for the women’s refuge. For more information on the services provided by YWCA Monaghan contact Charlie Mills by telephone on 047 62922 or 087 6103295 or by email on [email protected]
